This Working Paper analyses the main narratives on migration developed in traditional and social media around three different case studies in France: the attack on the Nice basilica in 2020, the intrusions on the Channel Tunnel in 2015 and the burkini controversy in 2016. This report uses a mixed qualitative and quantitative analysis of three different types of media – press, television and Twitter –, complemented with ten interviews with journalists. The results show the ease with which hatred of migrants and Muslims is propagated in media outlets such as Le Figaro and on Twitter, while newscasts seem more benevolent towards this population compared to the press. Several factors are put forward in the report to understand these rhetorical differences.
