When migration research meets photography: FIERI organises a public event in the framework of the International Month of Photjournalism Festival in Padova
On June 26, 2022, several BRIDGES experts took part in a public event organised by the Forum Internazionale ed Europeo di Ricerche sull’Immigrazione (FIERI) in the framework of the International Month of Photojournalism – IMP Festival in Padova. Under the title “When migration research meets photography”, this event explored the relation between photojournalism and the production and re-production of migration narratives in the public arena and in the media, more specifically.
The event count on the participation of Ferruccio Pastore, BRIDGES Scientific Co-Coordinator and Director of FIERI; Giulia Tornari, Director of Contrasto and ZONA; as well as other members of the BRIDGES team at FIERI, such as Pietro Cingolani and Annalisa Frisina. During nearly three hours, they discussed how photography may help reinforce or debunk certain narratives on migration building on the research on the production of migration narratives in the media carried out under Work Package 3.
The winners of the Sguardi Plurali migration photojournalism contest – Karim El Maktafi, Oleksandra Horobets and Danielle Souza da Silva -, organised by FIERI, also presented their works during this event, thus fostering the co-production component of this talk between experts and photographers with a migrant background.
