BRIDGES sponsors a panel on migrant youth at the 5th International Congress on Migration Journalism, organised by Por Causa in Mérida
On October 5-7, 2022, experts and journalists dealing with migration issues met in Mérida, Spain, to discuss how the media cover migration and what aspects of this coverage could be improved to counter hegemonic, often exclusionary, narratives on migration. The coverage of displacement in the context of the Ukrainian war, the role of fixers in the field, the gender narrative in migration processes, and children and unaccompanied migrant youth are just some of the topics that were tackled during this international congress organised by Por Causa.
In this framework, BRIDGES sponsored a panel in which Berta Güell, BRIDGES Assistant Coordinator and Researcher at CIDOB, presented the results of her work on how the migrant youth is portrayed by the extreme right in the Spanish media. This panel also counted on the participation of the journalist Ebbaba Hameida, who interviewed two young migrants on their own experiences. On the other hand, Blanca Garcés Mascareñas, BRIDGES Scientific Coordinator and Senior Research Fellow at CIDOB, presented the project at a rountable with other initiatives dealing with migration narratives.
